Answering a Survey

Tue Nov 3, 2009, 5:24 PM
  • Mood: Tired
This is a survey by TigerHawkmon, who wishes to do an essay on furries and anthros. I thought I'd try to help. And, I must confess, his incentive didn't hurt.

1 Is there a difference between anthro and furry? Why or Why Not?

Not in my book. To me, Anthro is just another term for furry, used in hopes of avoiding the furry stigma.

Why do I say that? Well, Anthro comes from the term "Anthropomorphic" (from Anthropo- ("Human") and Morphic ("Shaped")), so it really has more of a meaning of human than animal like furry.

2 What is Anthro to you (ie not dictionary definition)?

Humanoid animals, just like "Furry."

3 Why do you do anthro? (or why do you not)

I like cartoons, and I associate furries/anthros with cartoons. Thanks to some of the literature (such as Redwall), I learned that furries/anthros can also be associated with serious themes (which has a beautiful "click" into it).

4 What is Furry to you?

See under Anthro. Well, there is one more thing. Furry is also a fandom: people who enjoy fiction involving anthropomorphic animal characters.

5 Why are you furry? (or why are you not)

See Question 3. In addition, I think a well drawn anthropomorphic animal character is cute as well.

6 Are you a Therian? (someone with a spiritual connection to an animal)

Not unless "Human" counts. So that likely makes it "No."

7 How do you feel about zoos? Why?

They can't be right. I'm sorry, but having sex with an animal is no different from having sex with a child. And for much the same reason. Neither one is on the same plane of intelligence as an adult human. With a massive gap in place, there is a clear power discrepancy that has not been agreed to, thus making such sex fall into rape. The problem is, many Zoophiles do not even recognise this. How liking anthropomorphic animals differs from being a zoophile is a simple matter of intelligence. One cannot deny that Bug Bunny or Minerva Mink are just as intelligent as humans. (This is because, as fictional creations, they were written and made by humans, who can't really help but to insert human-level intelligence into the characters if they want us to identify on any level with them).

8 How do you feel about humanity? Why?

Well, I am a human. I can't escape that, so why should I try. Though admittedly, I am a rather cynical person overall, and feel that, in general, we need to improve. Granted, I am autistic (been diagnosed shortly after birth, this is not an excuse, and I have worked to overcome much of its problems) and I was one of the kids that everyone at school was picking on just to get their cruel jollies. Things were better in college, but the damage was already done. That, and the news. Really, is there a new program that doesn't expound on the horrors that humans inflict on one-another? Similarly, if animals ever gained human intelligence, they too would be in a similar situation.

9 How do you choose an animal?

What sounds fitting for a character? What sounds fun? Admittedly, I have no fursona myself, so frankly, I have no good answers on that.

10 How do you handle hybridization? (some people mix, some people avoid it, some people go off the deep end)

I avoid them out of laziness. Just one species is nice and descriptive, but if you have a wolf/mouse hybrid, that is not as easy to describe.

11 (Is there anything else you want to say?)

Don't do drugs, kids. Unless they're prescribed by a doctor, in which case you follow the doctor's rules for them.
